Cyber requirements,
and what purchasing owns

Most of this sits with IT. The parts that sit with purchasing are identifying which subcontractors handle protected information, flowing the obligations down, and being able to show you did.

NIST SP 800-171 sets out security requirements for protecting controlled unclassified information in non federal systems, and CMMC is the Department's programme for verifying that contractors meet them. On 13 July 2026 the Department of War suspended CMMC Phase II and later milestones pending review. Phase I self-assessment requirements and the underlying safeguarding obligations remain in force.

FAQ

Common questions about cyber requirements in purchasing

What is NIST SP 800-171?
A set of security requirements for protecting controlled unclassified information held in non federal systems. It is the technical baseline that the verification programme was built around.
What happened to CMMC in 2026?
On 13 July 2026 the Department of War announced the immediate suspension of CMMC Phase II, which had been scheduled to take effect on 10 November 2026, along with later implementation milestones, pending a review of the programme.
Does the suspension remove our obligations?
No. Phase I self-assessment requirements remain in force, as do the underlying safeguarding obligations. Terms already in your contracts continue to bind you regardless of the implementation timetable.
What was Phase II going to require?
Third party assessment as a condition of award for applicable contracts involving controlled unclassified information, rather than self-assessment.
What does purchasing own in all this?
Identifying which subcontractors will handle protected information, flowing the required terms down to them, evidencing that in the purchase file, and tracking status over the life of the award.
Should we pause our preparation?
That is a judgement for you, but the obligations in your existing contracts are unaffected by a programme review. Pausing safeguarding or self-assessment work because a verification milestone moved leaves contractual exposure in place.
How current is this page?
Status was checked in August 2026. This area has changed direction repeatedly, so confirm the position from official sources before relying on any timetable stated here.
